HEEB'S IS HERE TO STAY!
Heeb's Food Center
Bozeman, MontanaAs
Bozeman continues to change with construction
and business expansion, it’s nice to see some
consistency remains. Heeb’s Food Center has been
part of downtown Bozeman for over 58 years.
Established by Earnest and Edythe Heebs in 1947,
the store moved to the current location in 1967
and was purchased by Clark and Carol Finch in
1995. In addition to the Bozeman store, the
Finches own and operate L &F Market in
Manhattan.
Heeb’s successfully competes against Wal-Mart,
Costco, Albertson and other big box grocers in
the Bozeman area. Their niche is a strong
commitment to customer service and experienced
staff. Clark has updated the facility over the
past years, offering exceptional products and
selection. He strives to offer his clients the
latest in grocery products, while continuing to
provide the tried and true staples. As many as
19 of Clark’s co-workers (as Clark prefers to
call his employees) have been with the store
over 10 years and have vast experience in the
grocery industry.
The viability of the store was recently
threatened when a developer offered to purchase
the facility from the existing landlord. The
developer hoped to raze the building to build a
spa and hotel, placing the neighborhood and
eastside Bozeman in jeopardy of losing a needed,
viable business. The Heeb’s grocery store could
likely have successfully relocated elsewhere,
but Clark states “Both Carol and I consider
ourselves part of the revitalization in this
area. Many of our most loyal customers are from
this neighborhood.”
Competition for the property was fierce, however
with the help of financing from Manhattan State
Bank and the SBA 504 loan program offered
through Montana Community Finance Corporation,
Clark was successful in purchasing the building.
This resulted in saving not only his coworkers
jobs, but the other businesses occupying the
building. “The staff at Montana Community
Finance in Helena and Diane Spranget at
Manhattan State Bank were a pleasure to deal
with. This transaction had to take place quickly
and they worked hard to make this deal happen.
We will definitely consider using the 504 loan
program for any expansion needs in the future,”
Finch said.
Diane Spranget at Manhattan State Bank also
notes “thanks to the SBA 504 Program offered
through Montana Community Finance Corporation,
Manhattan State Bank was able to provide very
favorable financing terms to assist Clark and
Carol Finch in purchasing the Heeb’s Food Center
Building in Downtown Bozeman. The Finchs were
able to purchase the building with a low down
payment and finance the balance over long term
fixed interest rates.”
